Eating Korean Red Ginseng Reduces Symptoms Of Menopause!

It has been discovered that red ginseng is effective not only in improving the immune system but also in reducing symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, headaches and depression.

NCBI posted an an article called “effects of red ginseng supplementation on menopausal symptoms and cardiovascular risk factors in postmenopausal women: a double-blind randomized controlled trial.”

According to NCBI, professor Byoung Seok Lee and Seok Gyo Suh’s team at the maternity clinic of Severance Hospital conducted an experiment on 72 postmenopausal women between the age of 45 and 60 by dividing them into two groups of 36 women for 12 weeks.  One group was given 3g of red ginseng (containing 60 mg of ginsenoside) to eat, and the other group was given a placebo (red ginseng flavored corn starch) to eat.  Afterwards, a survey measuring the degree of the symptoms of menopause was conducted twice, and the scores of the group that was given red ginseng decreased by 30% and 33%, while the group that was given a placebo showed almost no difference.

In the same survey, the group that was given red ginseng showed 20% decrease in the level of total cholesterol and in the level of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) from before.  If this number is high, then it is diagnosed as hyperlipidemia.  In addition, the thickness of the carotid artery which is the blood vessel that goes to the brain became thinner.  If the carotid artery is thinner, it means arteriosclerosis, in which blood vessels become hardened, is less progressed.

In general, during menopause, the level of female hormones decreases, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hyperlipidemia. Professor Seok Gyo Suh said, “This study shows that if menopausal women take red ginseng continually, it helps to prevent cardiovascular diseases as well as to improve symptoms of menopause.” The results of this study was published in the issue of the online edition of ‘Menopause.’
